Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 7, 2026

NotALawyer ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website at notalawyer.com (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use our Service.

By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide directly

  • Account information: When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google.
  • Chat content: The legal questions and situation descriptions you type into our AI chat are stored to provide conversation history and improve the Service.
  • Email address: If you submit your email address on our Contact-a-Lawyer (formerly "Get Matched") or lead-capture forms, we store it to send you the requested attorney introduction information and any follow-ups you have explicitly opted into.
  • Attorney profile information: If you apply to become a legal partner, we collect your name, firm, bar number, specialties, location, and other profile details.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage data: We log pages visited, features used, and interaction events (e.g., which CTAs you clicked) to understand how the Service is used.
  • Device and browser information: Standard web server logs including IP address, browser type, and referring URLs.
  • Cookies: We use a session cookie ("sid") to keep you logged in and maintain your conversation history. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and operate the Service, including generating AI legal responses and storing your conversation history.
  • To send you a list of lawyers in your area when you request one. We do not select, rank, or recommend any specific attorney; you choose who (if anyone) to contact.
  • To send follow-up emails related to your legal issue (you can unsubscribe at any time).
  • To verify attorney credentials and manage the partner program.
  • To improve the Service through usage analytics.
  • To respond to your support requests.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

3. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in these limited circumstances:

  • Attorney partners: When you submit a Contact-a-Lawyer request or lead form, we share your email address, issue summary, and contact information with relevant licensed and bar-registered attorney partners in our network so they can follow up with you. We do not algorithmically rank or recommend any specific attorney to you.
  • Service providers: We use third-party services to operate the platform, including OpenAI (AI processing), Resend (email delivery), Stripe (payment processing), and Replit (hosting). These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy policies.
  • Legal requirements: We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government request.
  • Business transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

4. Data Retention

We retain your conversation history and account data for as long as you maintain an account with us. You may delete your conversations at any time using the controls in the chat interface. Lead capture emails are retained for up to 12 months unless you request deletion. You can request deletion of your data by emailing privacy@notalawyer.com.

5. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure session cookies, and access controls on our database. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.

6. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Request correction of inaccurate information.
  • Request deletion of your personal information.
  • Opt out of marketing emails by clicking "unsubscribe" in any email we send.
  • Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (if you are in the EU/EEA).

To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@notalawyer.com.

7. Your California Privacy Rights (CCPA / CPRA)

This section applies to California residents and supplements the rest of this Privacy Policy. It is provided to comply with the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act ("CCPA/CPRA").

Categories of personal information we collect

In the past 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information, as defined by the CCPA/CPRA:

  • Identifiers: name, email address, IP address, and Google account identifier (when you sign in with Google).
  • Customer records: contact information you submit through Contact-a-Lawyer, lead-capture, and partner application forms.
  • Internet or other network activity: pages visited, features used, interaction events, browser type, and referring URLs.
  • Geolocation data: approximate location derived from your IP address (e.g., state or city) used to surface attorneys in your area.
  • Professional information: for attorney partners, firm name, bar number, specialties, and similar credentials.
  • Inferences and content: the legal questions, situation descriptions, lease text, and AI conversation logs you submit.

We collect this information from you directly, automatically through your use of the Service, and from authentication providers (e.g., Google) when you choose to sign in. We use it for the business purposes described in "How We Use Your Information" and "How We Share Your Information" above.

Sale and sharing of personal information

NotALawyer does not "sell" your personal information for money, and we do not "share" your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or ad-tech trackers. We have not sold or shared the personal information of consumers (including minors under 16) in the preceding 12 months.

When you submit a Contact-a-Lawyer or lead-capture form, we disclose your contact information and issue summary to attorney partners so they can follow up with you, as described above. This disclosure is for your benefit at your request and is not a "sale" or "share" under the CCPA/CPRA.

Sensitive personal information

We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information (such as account log-in credentials or the contents of your communications) for purposes other than providing the Service you requested, as permitted by the CCPA/CPRA. You therefore do not need to limit our use of sensitive personal information, but you may still submit a request and we will confirm our practices.

Your California rights

If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

  • Know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources of that information, the business or commercial purpose for collecting it, and the categories of third parties with whom we share it.
  • Delete the personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
  • Correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
  • Opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information. As noted above, we do not sell or share personal information, but you may still submit a request and we will confirm.
  • Limit the use and disclosure of sensitive personal information to what is necessary to provide the Service.
  • Non-discrimination: we will not deny you the Service, charge you a different price, or provide a different level of quality because you exercised any of these rights.

How to submit a request

The fastest way to submit a CCPA/CPRA request is the in-product form at notalawyer.com/privacy/request. You can also email privacy@notalawyer.com with the subject line "California Privacy Request" and a description of the request you are making (know, delete, correct, opt-out of sale/share, or limit sensitive information). Authorized agents acting on behalf of a California resident may use either channel.

To verify your request, we send a one-time confirmation link to the email address associated with your account or lead submission. Clicking the link confirms the request came from you. We may ask for additional information that matches what we already have on file when reasonably necessary. We will not use information you provide for verification for any other purpose. We will respond to verifiable requests within the timeframes required by the CCPA/CPRA (generally 45 days, with one extension of up to 45 additional days when reasonably necessary).

You may also exercise your right to opt out of "sale" or "sharing" via the link labeled "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" in the footer of every page on this site, which takes you to the same form.

8. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us immediately.

9. Third-Party Links

Our Service may contain links to third-party websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites and encourage you to review their policies.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.
